Let’s talk Migranes

One of my worst menopause symptoms has been migraines. I’ve always suffered with hormonal headaches which improved with age but when I hit 40, they came back with a vengeance. At their worst I was having migraines 21 out of 28 days and even ended up in hospital. I cannot describe how much pain I was in, not to mention the exhaustion after an attack. I also experienced vertigo and nausea. I continue to have them but through GP support they happen less frequently albeit still severe. However I’ve found a few things that have helped that I hope helps others by sharing.

Do you suffer from migraines? Any tips for relief? If you do experience migraines, I totally get it and hope this post helps with relieving some symptoms or to know you are not alone.

  • I found dehydration is a trigger so plenty of water throughout the day
  • Limit alcohol to avoid dehydration
  • Limit processed food especially if dehydrated
  • Exercise and fresh air
  • If you do exercise make sure you keep muscles supple via regular massages. Investigate seeing a professional such as a chiropractor/physiotherapist/sport massage, dependant on your needs.
  • Explore forms of relaxation that work for you to de-stress
  • Buy a wheatie bag to warm your muscles. I find relief by warming my neck muscles
  • Speak to GP about medications that reduce frequency and also manage attacks
  • Ask for a referral to neurology if it’s persistent
  • Journaling can help with understanding possible triggers
