Menopause really impacted on my relationship with my clothes for various reasons. My shape changed despite same food consumption and exercise. Clothes felt tight, stopped fitting and I struggled to dress for my body shape. Hot flushes meant materials became an issue and close fitting clothes had me worrying about sweating through them.
Here are some tips I suggest to help navigate the symptoms and not let your style and wardrobe suffer:
- Wear layers. Means you are ready for being too hot or cold
- Wear breathable and wick resistant fabrics that help take moisture away from the body.
- Wear pattern and prints to disguise sweat
- Get pops of colour in your life. Colour can make you feel good
- Take some time to get acquainted with your changing body shape and consider getting support to understand what suits you in the present
- Invest in new underwear. So many women I meet have never had a bra fitting or not had one in years. Get a fitting! A well fitting bra makes a huge difference to how clothes look and fit. Consider shape wear too.
- Avoid clinging on to “ghosts of clothes past”. If they make you feel rubbish and are not serving you, get rid!
- Avoid high neck tops and dresses, an open neck gets more ventilation
- Most importantly it’s a privilege to age. Our bodies are amazing in so many ways. Try and use that as your focus to approach this phase of your life and style with gusto!!
